MEDIA CONSOLIDATION
Phone Briefing for Political, Media and

Featuring R.E.M.’s Mike Mills
Wednesday May 21st at 3:00 pm (EDT)
The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote
June 2nd on an unprecedented relaxation of its long-time ownership restriction
rules—a vote that will determine the future of freedom of speech and impact
American democracy. Common Cause and
MoveOn.org are launching a major campaign to stop the FCC from increasing
monopoly control over the nation’s airwaves.
You are invited to a phone briefing on this crucial issue
for media and entertainment writers on Wednesday, May 21st, at 3 PM hosted by
Common Cause and Moveon.Org.
WHAT: Teleconference
WHEN: Wednesday,
May 21st
3:00 PM, EST
Mike Mills, artist with R.E.M.
Chellie Pingree, president of Common Cause
Robert McChesney, president of Free Press, and
Professor of Communications, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Jenny Toomey, executive director of the Future of
Music Coalition
The campaign is mobilizing to demand that the FCC delay the
June 2nd vote to allow a public debate on the consequences of this decision.
“Relaxing or eliminating the ownership rules will damage our
democracy,” said Ms. Pingree, President of Common Cause. “Access to independent
information will dwindle. And a few huge media companies are likely to ignore
local news and their public responsibility.”
Common Cause is a 200,000-member organization that works for open, accountable government and the right of all citizens to be involved in shaping the nation’s public policies. Moveon.org is one of the most effective and responsive outlets for democratic participation with a network of more than 2,000,000 online activists.
